The RNEST Art Cart

Written by: John Ballou of JackBear Stamps (this article appeared on his blog on 10/7/15)

Imagine an artisan of old pushing around a cart from village to village full of his handmade wares. He peddles the treasures to welcoming faces who have never seen the likes inside the borders of that their town. Screeeeeeeech!  Wait, that isn't how this is supposed to start.

The story begins with an opportunity.  At the University of Rochester the student commons is called  Wilson Commons. Within the depths of the bottom floor lies a candy counter that sells candy by the bulk, as well as house made fudge, called the Common Market.  It is run by the Student Activities Office, which in full disclosure, is where my wife works (the office, not the counter).

The Student Activities Office had an idea to sell some items by outside vendors in a cart to be built next to the Common Market.  The cart was built to look like... well, like a cart.  It has wheels (though flat now), doors, and even lights.  First it was originally designed to sell plants, then imported hats, scarves, and mittens.  Those early vendors blazed the trail, ran the risks, but couldn't sustain.

Enter the idea.  What if the cart could sell handmade goods by local artists and craftspeople ?  I'm not sure who's idea it was, perhaps it was the Student Activities Office fearless leader Anne-Marie Algier.  Maybe it was the ever professional Laura Ballou (yes, that's my wife).  Or was it the cart's current supervisor, Michael Dedes.  Let's give them all credit.

Who could provide such handmade goods?  Who could work on such a small scale?  Who could bring enlightenment to the darkness?  Sorry.... getting carried away.

Along comes a man who knows a few people who could be of service.  Let's call him Jack.  Jack is a member of a group of local heroes artists who call themselves the Rochester NY Etsy Street Team (RNEST). The group is very diverse: jewelers, knitters, painters, illustrators, designers, photographers... you name it.  Though diverse, they all share three things in common: 1) they are local 2) they make things by hand 3) they have shops on etsy.com. Jack say's that he could get an artisan to set up in the cart for a month at a time.  They could call it the RNEST Art Cart.

New plexiglass doors were installed, new signs were made, contracts got written and rewritten. The RNEST Art Cart opened in the Fall of 2013. The first year was the trial.  Could this work?  Would there be enough interest?  Jack and Michael tried to pick artisans who might succeed.  Taking into consideration the time of year, students' interests, artisans with adequate inventory.  JackBear Stamps was first, since it would be important to work out some of the early kinks.  Next came Circuit Breaker Labs, Papersaurus Creative, Pure Bodycare Essentials, and DuncanClay.

The first year's trial taught Jack and Michael many lessons.  The successes outweighed the failures, so a second year was planned.  Leading the pack with her incredible letterpress-ed masterpieces was Chris Charles of Fly Rabbit Press.  Jack had hoped for a knitter to provide some warm hats and scarves in October, but he couldn't get one in time.

So coming full circle, back for the month of October 2014, JackBear Stamps will be in the RNEST Art Cart again until October 30th.  To finish off the semester, and throughout the holiday season, the Art Cart will feature Sunshyne Silverware's amazing repurposed jewelry and accessories.

How does the story end?  Will the RNEST Art Cart continue to flourish?  Can they keep local
handmade goods available to the University of Rochester community?  Will the mass produced forces of darkness take over? (Sorry, slipped off the edge there again)

The end is, "To be continued."

RNEST Craft Table Round-Up

Recently many RNEST members were set up at the ever popular Mayday Underground Art + Craft show on April 27th, 2013 at the Village Gate in Rochester, NY.  This is not a comprehensive round-up of the RNESTers present (as a vendor myself, I had a scant couple minutes to run around and try to catch everyone I could find in the 60+ vendors).  My apologies to those I missed (send me a picture though and I will add you in!)

If you were not at Mayday to shop, no problem! You can visit their Etsy shop by clicking on the shop name below the picture and it will link you there.  Read: VIRTUAL MAYDAY (haha)

In no particular order...

Meet the Members Monday : Eva Maron

Eva Maron, of Faerie Tails

Tell us about your craft

I mostly make purses/bags etc. I frequently use up-cycled clothes to make them, lots of t-shirts, but I will use anything that looks good. I don’t always do this, many times I will use new fabric, or a combination of new and used fabric. I have been sewing since I was 6 years old. I always frustrated my mother when she was trying to teach me because I could not grasp the ideas behind using a pattern! I would always try to change something, or do the steps in a different order. I finally realized that if I stopped worrying so much about doing everything exactly right, I could become pretty creative with the things I make. I love making bags, though I do sometimes deconstruct and reconstruct clothing. I don’t like to sell clothes on Etsy, primarily because everything I make is very specific to the body shape of the person wearing it, and that is really hard to do online. The other nice thing about making bags is that it doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, you can always pull off an awesome bag! My bags are definitely not for everyone, but I like to think they all have personality.

I also spend some time painting. I use acrylic paint on canvas mostly, and I tend to be drawn to figure painting. I do sometimes do portraits, and I also love painting trees (which are surprisingly similar to figures!) I don’t do realistic paintings, and I love to use bright, bold colors.

What is your creative process like?

When I am turning a t-shirt into a bag, I always follow the pattern, print or picture on the shirt. I try to allow the shape of the garment to dictate the final shape, size and style of the bag. I try to make sure that the bag I make represents the original garment. When I am using brand new fabric, I try to picture what it would look like as a bag, and I take into account the type of fabric, the colors print or pattern. I almost never use the same pattern twice, and if I do, it’s always in a different fabric. Every single bag is one of a kind.

My paintings are generally inspired by emotions, colors and shapes. I love the curves and lines of the human body, and I love spending extra time on the highlights and shadows. I usually start with colors and a mood, and go from there.

What inspired you to start an Etsy shop?

I can’t remember how I discovered Etsy. I originally made faerie wings, out of wire, fabric, glitter and whatever else worked. (Hence FAERIETAILS) While I loved doing this, each pair of wings was a very long process and there is not a huge group of people looking to walk around wearing wings! I do still make some occasionally, but mostly when someone who knows I do it requests something for a costume or photo shoot. I started listing my bags on Etsy around the same time I moved to Rochester. I decided that I needed something to do with all the bags I was making, and any extra income from sales would be nice to have.

Favorite item from your shop?

http://www.etsy.com/listing/79844802/hobo-bag-tie-dye-pink-orange-and-purple

Its got the colors I love, and is just super cute!

Art/Craft tool you simply could not live without?

Without a doubt, my sewing machine.

What craft or skill have your always wanted to learn?

Sculpting. I have tried a few times, and failed miserably. I love the amazing things that people can make out of clay.

What artist/craftsperson/design inspires you?

I don’t know if I can name one specific artist that inspires me. I am constantly inspired by the unique people I know and their style. I am definitely drawn to more quirky, whimsical, bright colors, but I also love punk style and the steampunk aesthetic.

Favorite color?

Depends on my mood. Anything bright and bold. Hot pink, bright lime green, turquoise, bright purple, and bold orange. I also love the contrast of bright colors against black or white.

How long have you lived in the Rochester area?

I have only lived in Rochester since May 2010! I grew up in a suburb of Buffalo.

What attracted you to RNEST, and what would you like to bring to table?

I got very excited when I discovered RNEST. I had just moved to Rochester, and didn’t know many people. I wanted to find a group of people that would understand my sometimes insane hording of fabric and old clothes, my love of paint, and the desire to be successful at bringing our creations to others. I am not always sure what I can bring to the table, but I love participating in activities, and I am always willing to help out as best I can.

What do you do when you're not crafting?

In my free time I am addicted to all things fantasy and sci-fi. I watch all sorts of TV shows and movies, and I love to read. Books of all kinds make me happy. Every year I spend labor day weekend in Atlanta Georgia attending DragonCon, which is a huge (and I mean HUGE) sci-fi/fantasy/pop culture convention. I have done some amateur cosplay, but even when I don’t, I love the community and the completely different world I am in when I am there.

Career wise, I am a mental health therapist. I work with children and adolescents, though I am most comfortable with the teenagers. The kids I work with have all sorts of things going on, from ADHD, Bipolar, Depression, Anxiety and many of them have trauma. I love the kids I work with, but I also think that the heavy nature of my day to day job is why I seek out such whimsical styles and fantasy worlds in my outside of work life.

Pets?

I have five. Four cats Malcolm, Bella, Dexter and Squeakers. One dog, a 9 year old Golden retriever named Juno. Dexter is definitely my little sewing… helper. He loves to attack whatever I am trying to sew, lay on my fabric and generally get in the way. He also loves to stick his paws in wet paint, and try to run around the house!

Anything else cool / interesting about yourself that you'd like to talk about?

I think I about covered it!!!

Meet the Members Monday

To mix it up a bit between tutorials, we thought it would be nice if you had a chance to meet more of our members. (Besides, learning a new crafty project every week is tough).
Without further ado, I like to introduce the first RNEST member of this interview installment :

Francesca DeCaire, of Francesca DeCaire

Tell us about your craft

My lampworking fascination began in 2005 when I learned to make blown vessels from borosilicate glass rods and tubes. My first torch was a National. Today I use a GTT Lynx and soft glass. I typically use Effetre glass, but I'm loving the unique colors that CIM has brought to the table. I enjoy making beads, cabochons and rings. Occasionally I'll break out with a marble or small vessel.

What inspired you to start an Etsy shop?

Etsy seemed to have the best online store presence and reputation. I felt my work was maturing, that it was time to offer it for sale via the internet.

What is your favorite item from your shop?

My current favorite item in my shop is my Baby Penguin Bead. It fits on those cool charm bead bracelets that everyone digs.

What art/craft tool you simply could not live without?

My tungsten pick is great for poking and dragging glass, although I couldn't live without my brass paddle or my mashers.

What craft or skill you've always wanted to learn?

Working from a furnace with a huge gather of molten soft glass would be amazing.

What artist/craftsperson/designer inspires you?

Dora Schubert, she is a glass goddess.

What's you favorite color?

Green is what I would have said as a child. I'm not sure anymore. My mind is much more complicated and I think about it too hard.

How long have you lived in the Rochester area?:

All my life, aside from being born in Michigan. My family moved to Rochester before I was even a toddler.

What attracted you to RNEST, and what would you like to bring to table?

When I first looked into RNEST I knew it was perfect for me. I saw a happy team of artists and craftsmen that were motivated. Helping the team network comes natural to me. Our team promotes one another like wildfire! I follow my teammates closely, they are a powerful source of inspiration. Anytime I meet someone who is artistic I speak of RNEST.

What do you do when you're not crafting?

I play with my handsome son Lucas. He’s big into pots and pans.

Any pets?

Dondi (AKA Big Dumb Dumb) and I haven't been too active together since Lucas came into the world. We used to hike Tryon at least 4 times a week. Hopefully in the spring we will pick up where we left off. There are also two cats, the brown one (bad cat) and the gray one (good cat). They are OK, they came with Jason, my computer dork better half.

Anything else cool you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I'll be moving my all over the place crazy set up into my new studio at the Hungerford Building, 1115 E Main street, suite 216. Come visit me during First Friday (first Friday of every month, 6pm - 9pm). You may also schedule an appointment with me, call (585) 789-1761 or inquire at francesca@francescadecaire.com. Stability, at last!

Make sure you check out Francesca's Etsy Shop, Blog, Facebook page, and Twitter to find learn more about her work!

Treasury Tuesday BONUS: The Lilac Festival is Coming!

Treasury Tuesday BONUS! This Etsy Treasury is inspired by one of my favorite local festivals...Rochester's Lilac Festival! The festival starts this upcoming weekend on May 13th and goes to May 22nd, with craft fairs on the 2 weekends.

Many of the items featured are from fellow RNEST members, others are simply from artists who live or have lived in Rochester, and some items just have colors that remind me of the beautiful lilacs in Highland Park.

I'm looking forward to going this year! I hope you are too! :D

Jack's Pick: Louis the Lonely Bunny by Gock's Frocks

Each Friday I select an item created by a member of the Rochester NY Etsy Street Team(RNEST). What criteria do I use? I look for great looking items that I think are well made offered for a great price!

This week I have found a cute little lonely bunny by the name of Louis. Now Louis is probably lonely because he would like a loving family to become a part of for Easter or springtime. At least that is what I think, but maybe he's lonely for some other reason only a rabbit would
understand.

Cute little Louis was made by Gock's Frocks. Now usually I'm cruising through Gock's etsy store to find skirts for my little daughter like I did a few months back, but I came across this little guy and thought I would have to share him for Easter.

Also, I have also learned that Gock's Frocks has joined forces with Reckless Necklace (great name!) and has taken up studio space in Rochester at the Hungerford Building on 1115 E. Main Street through Door 5 on the second floor. She is having an open house tonight, April 2, from 5-9 pm. I'm hoping to check it out if my little one can stay awake! It is an open house for Rochester's First Fridays event, so there will be other studios open in the area as well, so stop in and maybe you will see Louis and all of Gock's Frocks excellent craftsmanship.

Make-it Mondays: And by "make" I mean SHOP!

From Buenahelena!

This Sunday marks a milestone for our street team. On December 13th we are holding our first organized, public sale event as a team, the R-NEST WinterFest, at the RIT Inn and Conference Center (5257 West Henrietta Rd. Henrietta, NY 14602). Join us from 9 am-4 pm to support fellow team members and shop, shop, shop for great, handmade holiday gifts. Every purchase of $10.00 at an individual seller's booth will buy you a raffle ticket towards free prizes from individual sellers and one grand prize basket of goodies from ALL of our vendors and other street team members.

Top 5 reasons to shop local this year:
1.) Your gifts will be unique! No embarrassing double gifting!
2.) You'll boost small entrepreneurs in Rochester in a tough economy and support its Arts community.
3.) You can rest assured that you are getting a quality item that was ethically produced. Not in a sweat shop. Not by small children working for a pennies a day...(cough, cough Walmart).
4.) You won't get that nagging mall headache. You know that brain overload of too many colors, lights and choices?
5.) You will avoid horrendous traffic and that angry, overtired shopper who will invariably yell at you for "pulling into their space" in crowded parking lots.

If you can't make it to the WinterFest, be sure to visit our team member's Etsy shops. This holiday season many of us are offering specials sales and deals from discounts on multiple purchases to free shipping. (Team members leave you deals in the comments section of this post!) Happy giving! Don't forget to give a little TLC to yourself as well...

Newly Launched Rochester NY Street Team - Etsy Rochesterians, Please join!

Welcome to the official Rochester NY Etsy Street Team Blog.
My friend and fellow Etsian Lauren of www.LaurensLovelies.etsy.com and I Linda of www.justicejewelry.etsy.com decided it was about time for Rochester to have it's own Etsy group. Lauren is a graphic artist and has created the graphics on our Etsy page and blog. We hope our group will be established on Etsy by the end of this week. If you are a fellow crafter from the Rochester area and would like to join our group for networking and business promotion, please send Lauren and I a convo :)
